The Magnificent Cristiano Ronaldo has set a new benchmark for Spanish Football after broke the 20 years record made by Hugo Sanchez for goals scored in a single season.
Ronaldo's brace in Saturday's 8-1 drubbing of Almeria saw him finish with an unprecedented 40-goal haul in La Liga - two more than the previous single-season record jointly held by Hugo Sanchez (1989/90 season) and Telmo Zarra (1959/60).
The world's most expensive player also finished the season with an astonishing 53 goals in all competitions - one of which was the match-winner in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, which earned Ronaldo his first piece of silverware with Madrid since his £80 million move from Manchester United in 2009.
Ronaldo's phenomenal goal return this season saw him comfortably win the Pichichi award as the leading scorer in Spain, finishing nine clear of Barca's Linell Messi, and also seems certain to earn the Portugal international his second European Golden Shoe, which he also won while at United in 2008.
